There are a number of tests to detect bone-related problems at an early stage. A simple blood test can tell you the amount of calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphate in the body. It can also detect rheumatoid factors and uric acid levels in the blood. An X-ray or MRI scan can detect deformation or arthritis in the joint. A gold standard bone densitomery test can detect the density of the bone and any calcium or protein deficiency. "Smokers, alcoholics, people on steroids, people who have thyroid problems or epilepsy should do the bone density test", says Dr. Sushil Sharma, president, Arthritis Foundation of India. "All bone-related problems, if detected early, are treatable. Most of the conditions are reversible, too."
